The so-called Gauß-observatory alongside the new town hall was build in the year 1816.

It was build after the drawings by the university master builder Georg-Heinrich Borheck. Karl Friedrich Gauß worked here until his death. One of his most important developments is the facility of the first electro-mechanical telegraph, which he installed with his colleague, the physicists Wilhelm Weber. Our present electronic media system has its origin here.

Important utensils of the Gaissian work can still be seen in the observatory. His developed theory (Gaussian distribution) and some Göttinger building are to be seen on our 10 DM note.
