Until a few years ago a border of over 1400km ran from the Lübecker Bay to Hof in Bayern, which was perfected over four decades. It separated land and people in a unnatural and brutal way. This 'Iron Curtain' that ran through the middle of Germany fell in 1989. By now the once conspicuous and nearly insurmountable border can hardly be detected in many places with the naked eye.
The border facilities have more or less vanished, the border strip has been taken over again by nature and the people. But the history of the inner-German border and the German separation and what it meant over decades for the people and nature must not be forgotten.
The Grenzlandmuseum Eichsfeld at the former border crossing Duderstadt - Worbis, at the present state border between Thuringia and Lower Saxony contributes that this doesn't happen. The museum, which opened in November 1995, wants to inform about the history of the inner-German border and the consequences it had for people and nature in the bordering area and through that keep memory alive and acts as a reminder for the future.
