The Seeburger Lake is the largest natural water surface in south Lower Saxony.
The lake was already honoured in 1845 in the classic chronicle of Eichsfeld with an illustration and poem: "Auf dem stillen See, da schwimm ich allein, kein Lüftchen rauscht durch das Schilf hin- durch, tief unten im Grunde auf Felsenstein liegt eine alte versunkene Burg."

The Seeburger Lake is being depicted lovingly by the locals as the "Eye of the  Eichsfeld".

The declared goal of the community Seeburg is to present tourism and nature conservation in harmonically co-existence.
Parts of the lake surface and the banks of the Seeburger Lake were put under nature protection in the year 1973. In connection with the then already existing tourist activities the Nature Reserve and Recreation Area Seeburger Lake was created.

Near the lake a wonderful leisure area with adventure playground and tennis courts has been created. Among others there is also a natural lake for swimming with separate swimming pool for children, boats for hire, a mini-golf facility, a camping site as well as a bird's museum.

Numerous hiking and cycle paths are sign-posted among them a 4,5km long walking path around Seeburger Lake with 7 stations.
Sailing and angling is on the lake also possible after registration. The district Göttingen started around the village the re-naturation project Seeanger and Lutter Lake.
