Seeburger Lake Legend

In the classic chronicle of the Eichsfeld from 1845 the lake was mentioned with a depiction and poem:
"Auf dem stillen See, da schwimm ich allein, kein Lüftchen rauscht durch das Schilf hin- durch, tief unten im Grunde auf Felsenstein liegt eine alte versunkene Burg."

EARL ISANG is a mythical figure. One can still meet people among the locals who can tell legends.

It is said that one can see in the middle of the Seeburger Lake the spire of Earl Isang's castle with a lot of patients and only when the water level is favourable.

According to the eerily-beautiful legend this castle sank in ocean of tears, which were wept by Isang out of remorse about his far-reaching wicked life before he secluded himself in a monastery.

A version of this myth is also played in the theatre.
