'Torun is one of Poland's prettiest towns that has cultivated for nearly 800 years traditional economy and cosmopolitanism. The gothic buildings of Thorn's old town have been listed since 1997 at the World Culture and Natural Heritage of UNESCO, this attests the century-long economical, cultural and intellectual contacts with leading European city associations that were united in the Hanesatic City Association. Among the splendid historical buildings in Thorn one can admire a lot: the old town town hall, Patrician houses, which are the best preserved complexes of gothic housing architecture in North Europe, Copernicus house - a grand house from the 15th century, probably the birthplace of the great astronomer. Thorn's beauty is underlined by numerous churches, whose silhouettes fit into the picturesque town panorama. Here is the cathedral of the Holy Johannes with the late gothic triptych in the high altar and the above hanging crucifix from the 14th century and the wall paintings at the presbytery from the 14th century with the Last Judgement and the crucifixion scene as well as the Kopernikus chapel with the epitaph of Nikolaus Kopernikus at the south nave, the Jakobs Church that is considered as one of the most splendid medieval churches in North Poland, the former Franciscan Church dof Assumption Day from the 14th century, the first very spacious church in Pommerellen with a 27m high hall, the former Protestant Holy Ghost Church with rococo interior. The people of Thorn, who have for centuries build prosperous bands with Europe's outstanding cities still cultivate that tradition today. Testimony is the membership in the Bund of the Neue Hanse, the co-operation with the twin-towns: the German Göttingen, Dutch Leiden, Finish Hameenlinna, with the Russian Kaliningrad and the Slovak Cadca and the North-American Philadelphia.
The university, named after the great astronomer, continuous the tradition of the former  Stefan-Bathory-University in Wilna, whose professors founded the Thorn academy in 1945; they found here an excellent climate for scientific work. The fruits of the so-called   Thorner Konservierungsschule or the University Centre for Astronomy - to only name two examples - is known and being appreciated by the world.
Thorn is also a town of artists and cultural animators whose talents represent for the Copernicus town characteristic atmosphere the creative activities.
For this and to admire the gothic elaborate cared for beauty of the town or to breath in the matchless colourful culture hassle and busstle of this town, every year ca 2 million tourist travel to this town. The always hospitable Thorn invites those who know the town to come again and those who haven't seen the town as yet.'
