Göttingen Twin Town: Pau



Pau is the biggest city in the Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques and after Bordeaux the second largest in the region Aquitanien.
Population: 78.732 (1999)  
The city is the seat of the prefecture Départements. The prefecture also governs the Arrondissement Pau, it consists of 21 cantons and is main village  (French: chef-lieu)of the cantons Jurançon, Pau-Centre, Pau-Est, Pau-Nord, Pau-Ouest and Pau-Sud.
Pau is situated at the river Gave de Pau.
Pau is birthplace of Heinrich IV (1553-1610) and Karl XIV (1763 - 1844).
Twin town: Pau is the twin town of the Lower Saxon city of Göttingen.
This medieval city built in the 12th century is formed by history and culture.
Points of interests: The museums of Pau - among them the one above the other situated splendid windows, which are exemplary for its architectonical quality. The museum also has one of Europe's most outstanding collection of wall hangings from Flanders and
Gobelin tapestries from the 16th, 17th and 18th century.
If you are interested in painting and sculptures then visit the twelve art galleries and exhibitions in Pau.
Pau is really spoiled by nature and with its decorative gardens and wonderful parks one of France's flower riches cities. The whole year round opera and theatre and dance presentations take place here as well as concerts, exhibitions - also the carnival of Pau in the time from 14th July to 20th August.
You really shouldn't miss this!
Sports: The city of Pau is famous for its annual motorsports events. Formula 1 took place here eleven times until 1963 and until 1998 races of Formula 2 resp. the Formula  3000 European Championship. Since 1999 international races of Formula 3 are taking place here.
