Situated right in the city centre the Old Botanical Garden houses on an area of less than 5 ha over 10.000 plant species. Outdoors there is among others a system with 1.200 species, a pond, a alpenum, a cultural-historical section (cultivated plants, weeds, medicinal plants) and a arboretum with old trees; tens of thousands of wild bulb plants appear in spring on the meadow. Some grounds have stayed untouched for roughly one hundred years, which lead to settling of animals that have no equal in other city centres (insects, amphibians, birds, bats etc.).

The Old Botanical Garden has eight public hothouses (palms, cycadeen, araceen, cacti, Victoria and fern houses as well as two greenhouses for overwintering of the cold house plant collections). Emphases are on the European wild plants, the cold house plants, bromeliads (among others. 500 Tillandsia-species), orchids, insectivores, tropical water plants etc. The special charm of the garden are the historical hothouses, party built in the last century, where the collections are being presented.
The New Botanical Garden was founded in
1967... "

"The New Botanical Garden houses also the Gärtnerisch-Botanischen Briefe, a nationwide published information paper for botanical gardeners.
Nearby is the Forest-Botanical Garden, part of the forestry faculty situated, which has a extensive wood collection  (Arboretum). Botanical Garden and Forest-Botanical Garden work closely together and are consolidated in "Freundeskreis der Botanischen Gärten in Göttingen e. V. "
